Mega Million Numbers – Easy Pickings?

 

I was just thinking the other day about the odds of winning the jackpot in Mega Millions. Do you realize the odds of picking the 5 Mega Million numbers are 3,904,701 to 1? The odds of picking the Mega Million numbers + 1 are 175,711,536 to 1. You’re probably thinking to yourself, “Gee, that’s not so bad.”Well, maybe not.

 

It did get me curious about the chances of other things happening so I looked a few things up:

• The chances of getting a full house when playing poker (5 card) is 694 to 1

• The chances of getting a royal flush 649,740 to 1

• The chances of drowning in the bathtub 685,000 to 1 (take showers?)

• The chances of fatally slipping in the bath or shower 2,232 to 1 (oh, man, now what?)

• If you’re a golfer the odds of getting a hole-in-one are 5,000 to 1

• The chance you will be considered possessed by Satan are 7000 to 1

 
That last one’s a little scary. Does that mean we are 558 times more likely to be considered possessed by Satan than picking the Mega Million numbers? Probably depends on who your friends are.

 

Picking Mega Million Numbers – Why Do We Do It?

 

With the odds of picking the Mega Million numbers so low, it makes you wonder why we even bother to buy a ticket. After all, the odds in poker are higher and there’s the betting system that guarantees you will win every time! (See Betting For Sports)

Well, the reason is that it’s just $1 and that $1 allows us entry into the fantasy world of our own creation. No one is really deluded into believing they are actually going to win (ok, once in a while, we’re hoping for divine intervention). We just hold out that slim wisp of hope that maybe, just maybe, we’ll get lucky. After all, others have won so, why not me? We have that list of special lucky numbers that we pick every time, knowing eventually, it will pay off. Perhaps it’s your kids’ birthdays, your anniversary, dates of special occasions or events. Sometimes you “quick pick” and hope for the best.

Mega Million Numbers & Your Dreams

Yes, it’s the hopes, the dreams and fantasies that buying that ticket allows us to have. That is the real payoff. Without investing that $1 we are not allowed into the club of dreamers. We can only sit on the outside looking in and ridicule those “foolish enough” to put down the $1 entry fee. It’s just fun though, isn’t it? Imagine you match the Mega Million numbers…now you can picture your bills all paid, the mortgage a thing of the past, the new cars (his & hers), the vacations and travel and whatever else fits your dream.

Now, instead of working you can volunteer your time to the charitable causes that touch your heart. Or, contribute financially where needed.

When you start thinking along these lines, you begin to know yourself and realize you are a good person. Of course, since you are such a good person, you deserve to win…right? Maybe you should!

It’s great and cheap entertainment so, go ahead and enjoy it. You may yet match the Mega Million numbers.
